After the firestorm that Epic set off yesterday with the announcement of no network compatibility, Dan Vogel stopped by the forums to clear some things up.To put this into a bit more perspective - we're talking about 5 MByte worth of source code changes (and this doesn't even include new code) from UT2003 v2225 to the current UT2004 code tree... It's actually quite scary to see how much has changed. We are now at version 3053 which means we had over 800 internal builds since the last UT2003 patch thus far.
Anyone familiar with merging and backporting code will know the dependency game where one tiny feature you want to port will have a dependency on another which then will have a dependency on yet another feature and so on till you realize that to backport it you either had to rewrite it in the old codebase or literally backport everything.
AFAICT Unreal -> Unreal Tournament had fewer code changes than Unreal Tournament 2003 -> Unreal Tournament 2004.
Daniel, Epic Games Inc.As far as I am concerned any changes that will make the game better is ok with me. Now that they are scrapping the '03 patch they can spend more time on getting a demo out. |

Unfortunately now that raises the bar to a lot of gamers. They claimed backwards compatibility, and have now broken that, and that's not gonna make quite a few people happy, especially those who don't upgrade right away, as many servers I suspect will be upgrading, and now they won't be able to play on those servers.
It just means that UT2k4 will have to have even more of an impact than it previously needed for it's market share. |

It means that Server operators will have to chose between 2003 & 2004.
If there had been backwards compatibility, you could have continued online, playing old 2003 servers until a good number of 2004 servers were set up. It would have made for a smoother transition.
But now Unrealers will be split 3 ways, for a while.
2003 players will be squeezed out, forced to upgrade. |

It seems to me that the 'n00bs' would be the ones buying the shiny new games, while the skilled players are more apt to stick with the UT2003 they already own... |

those "skilled players" are just guys that got good at a game and can't let go because they can actually kill someone in UT2k3 (CS) |

To be honest, I rarely read anything but the main news page. No need to register. |
