hello, i finaly found out how to open ports on my router.
but i was wondering if its safe to open ports? i did a port scan on www.grc.com and it came out clean, all stealth, so i guess thats a good thing, but how reliable are those tests?
so heres my questions:
1) Is it safe to open ports?
2) Does it mather what port you open if the program/game lets you choise?
3) Is the part where you open ports called NAPT Entries?

thanks y'all

Stealth is better than open, but not as good as closed.

There's only 1 way to have a truely safe computer, and that's to not let it be online, ever. Course, that kinda isn't a reality now is it? So we start looking for the best solutions to keeping our system as secure as possible while still being online, enter the realm of the firewall.

As for your questions, sure, it's safe to open ports, if you know EXACTLY which ports you need to open, and open no more than is required. Reason? This again limits your risk factor, which increases your probability of avoiding attack. So this kinda ties into your second question being that yes, it kinda does matter. I'd recommend opening the programs default unless it's a known problem. How do you know if it's a problematic port? Do a search on it, and find out how secure it is.

As for your reference to NAPT entries, that's all dependant on what router you've got. So the terminology varies from router to router.

thanks, heres what it is, the program allowes you to open any port, its for Active or Passive more, if you leave the field blank it will pick a random port, but since theyr all closed exept 1 i opend for that program, UDP and TCP, i filled in that port number.
do i just search on google for "Port ##" or something? where ## is the port number?

It's possible to make your computer at least "safe enough", but not entirely safe.

If you have run through the GRC check then I think you should be alright. If you open only the ports you need, and in the proper fashion, then I doubt you would need to worry.
