A quick note, vsync is not 'only required in old games to lower framerate'. What it actually does is make the video card wait for the monitor to finish drawing the current frame before sending the next frame, which stops the monitor drawing a chunk of the old frame and chunk of the new frame at a time. This prevents tearing which is particularly noticable with a low framerate when turning fast.
The framerate drop is minimal (1-3 frames) and it makes it look prettier...
