The open source, and rather visually stunning Cube Engine has recieved a rather sizeable update recently. Built for both Windows and Linux, this engine shows some serious promise for future gaming systems where both beauty, and cross platform availability are a requirement. For those unfamiliar with the project, here's a brief (courtesy of the Cube Engine Website):
Cube is an open source multiplayer and singleplayer first person shooter game built on an entirely new and very unconventional engine. Cube is a landscape-style engine that pretends to be an indoor FPS engine, which combines very high precision dynamic occlusion culling with a form of geometric mipmapping on the whole world for dynamic LOD for configurable fps & graphic detail on most machines. Uses OpenGL & SDL.
Good news for gamers of all types, especially those with some coding ability who'd like a shot at creating their very own game without paying thousands of dollars just to get access to a good engine. And hey, the download is still quite a lightweight in the engine field, weighing in at only 18 megs. So check it out today.
